The Five Virtues of T'ai Chi

  1. Do not limit yourself. Make your study broad and diversified. As with your stance, allow it to move easily in many different directions.

  2. Constantly examine and question. Ask how and why T'ai Chi works. As in your study of T'ai Chi, develop your sensitivity and be receptive to that which others ignore.

  3. In your thinking, be deliberate and careful. Use your mind to achieve a proper understanding of T'ai Chi.

  4. Clearly analyze. Separate concepts distinctly, understand them individually, then decide upon a proper course. As in T'ai Chi, strive to find the way of continuous, flowing motion.

  5. Practice sincerely. As with heaven and earth, the eternal, constancy is at the root.
