Tai Chi for Arthritis®: The Forms

Tai Chi for Arthritis® was developed by Dr. Paul Lam specifically as a therapy for treating arthritis. It is based on Sun style Tai Chi forms.

Tai Chi is practised throughout the world for its many health benefits. It strengthens and mobilises joints and muscles and improves physical fitness and mental relaxation.

Sun style movements are particularly suited to helping people with arthritis. The movements are slow and gentle and the level of exertion can be adjusted to suit each person's physical condition— and the high stance of Sun style is easier for older people and those who are just getting back to exercising. The "follow stepping" technique (when stepping forwards or backwards with one foot, the other follows) of Sun style helps develop agility and balance. The qigong movements help breathing and relaxation and are effective in helping to heal and repair cartilage, as well as helping to soothe inflamed joints and tendons.

As with all Tai Chi styles, there is an intellectual component to the study of the form that can engage the practitioner's interest for a lifetime.
