O wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!
It wad frae mony a blunder free us,
And foolish notion.
-- Robert Burns

Last night I wrote a journal entry. I wrote about Dave and Touring Theatre. I told the truth, but not all the truth-- that would have taken forever! But I didn't lie or evade, either. I just pared the tale down to the essentials, made it tellable. And in doing that, I found another truth, a truth I hadn't known existed until I wrote it on the page. For me, it was a revelation-- an illumination of myself.

Time and distance lend perspective. Very few of us can see ourselves or our situations clearly when we are in the midst of the experience, but we need to do so to understand what has happened. We need to put experiences in perspective so we can understand ourselves.

I think that's one of the things this journal is about: perspective. It's a way of establishing a perspective for myself.
